propaganda technique
Firehose of falsehood
Also called: Firehosing
The firehose of falsehood floods channels with a high volume of messages, many false or contradictory, faster than they can be checked.
How it works
Volume, speed and repetition make claims feel familiar, and familiarity feels like truth. Contradictions do not matter; the aim is confusion and fatigue rather than a consistent story.
Examples
After an incident, several incompatible explanations circulate within hours from linked accounts.
Dozens of near-identical posts repeat a claim across many platforms.
How to spot it
- Many versions of a story appearing at once.
- The same claim repeated across many accounts.
- Corrections never catch up with new claims.
How to respond
- Rely on a few trusted, accountable sources.
- Focus on what is verified, not on every claim.
- Avoid amplifying claims even to debunk them, unless they are already widespread.
