propaganda technique
Half-truth
Also called: Paltering, Misleading truth
A half-truth is a statement that is literally true but leaves out information in a way that creates a false impression.
How it works
Because each word is accurate, the speaker can deny lying. The deception lies in the impression created and in the omission.
Examples
"Our product contains no added sugar" (it is mostly fruit concentrate).
"The defendant has never been convicted" (because the trial is still ongoing).
How to spot it
- Precise, carefully worded claims that avoid the obvious question.
- Technically true statements that answer a different question.
- Missing context that would change the picture.
How to respond
- Ask the direct question the statement avoids.
- Look for the missing context.
- Judge statements by the impression they create, not just the wording.
